Small changes to how and where you fill up compound fast. Here are fifteen that genuinely move the needle — roughly in order of impact.
Where and when you buy
- Compare prices before every fill. The cheapest servo can be 30–50c/L less than the dearest a few streets away. A quick check with Bowserly is the single biggest saver.
- Time the price cycle. In the big capitals, filling near the bottom of the cycle beats the top by 20–40c/L. See our guide to fuel price cycles.

- Join free loyalty programs. Many chains offer member pricing or points that convert to fuel savings.
- Avoid highway, airport and remote servos. They price for a captive market — fill up before you get there.
- Don't panic-fill a near-empty tank at the top of the cycle. Put in just enough to reach a cheaper station if prices have just jumped.
- Consider warehouse fuel. Membership warehouse sites are often among the cheapest in a city.
Which fuel you choose

- Try E10 if you're compatible. It's normally the cheapest petrol, and for many cars the per-kilometre cost is lower even after the small efficiency hit.
How you drive and maintain
- Keep tyres at the correct pressure. Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and burn more fuel.
- Drive smoothly. Hard acceleration and heavy braking are fuel-hungry; ease on and off the throttle.
- Slow down on the highway. Fuel use rises sharply at higher speeds — easing off a few km/h helps.
- Lose the dead weight and drag. Empty the boot of what you don't need and remove roof racks when unused.
- Don't idle. If you'll be stopped for more than a minute, switch off.
- Keep up basic servicing. Clean air filters, healthy spark plugs and correct oil all help efficiency.
